The ships were really long.

The closed bridge. We saw three ships go through while we were there.

Niagara Falls town centre looks strangely retro.

The Toronto skyline seen across Lake Ontario from Niagara on the Lake.

We've stayed in Crystal Beach near Fort Erie for the last week and a bit. Fort Erie is just across the Niagara River from Buffalo, New York.

The region is really beautiful this time of year with loads of flowers and greenery in all of the towns. I'm always surprised how much forest there is in North America, even in regions with lots of farm land.

Not far from where we stayed is the Welland Canal which links Lake Ontario to Lake Erie. I've seen plenty of canals and locks in Europe but this is on a completely different scale. We watched enormous cargo ships pass through the canal and under a massive lift bridge.

Niagara Falls was very close so we had to go take a look. We'd all been before but it never gets boring. It was exceptionally busy this time so we didn't hang around for too long. A short drive down the river is Niagara on the Lake which is a really beautiful little town. It felt like something out of a movie it was so bright and tidy.
